Ticket #75922 Public

Facebook Events <−> Google Calendar <−> EventOn

We all know the EventON sync plugin is not working for Facebook events right now. So I would appreciate some guidance on a workaround solution we are dependent on for the moment.

1. What is the suggested workflow to import Facebook Events via the Google Calendar to EventON?

2. Is there a way to directly import the iCalendar files Facebook is providing?
This is how the typical link looks like:
webcal://www.facebook.com/ical/u.php?uid=123456789012345&key=qwertyuiopasdfgh

Many thanks,
Osewa

if you can get a physical file (which I don’t think you can from that link above) we do have an addon to import an ical file however that link above doesn’t provide a file that I can download I get an error message when trying to

      Thanks for your reply.
It’s just a anonymised “dummy” link that is not supposed to work, it’s just for showing the structure of the link. But basically every personal Facebook profile (but not the Facebook pages unfortunately) do provide such link.

      What addon are you suggesting?

And any guidance for my first question in case I would rather go with the Sync addon I already bought?

      Hey,

Can we see a normal file and not a dummy file please, so we can give u accurate reply?

      Hello,

I would not want to share a link to my private events here in public, sorry. But if you have a Facebook account yourself that’s how to get the link:

      1. Navigate to a web browser and login to your Facebook account
      2. Head to your Events page or copy and paste this URL into your web browser: https://www.facebook.com/events/
      3. On the Events page, scroll down and you will see an option on the right stating You can add your events to Microsoft Outlook, Google Calendar or Apple Calendar.
      4. Right click which option you want to copy, for us we choose, Upcoming Events and select Copy link address

This ticket is about a workflow to import Facebook Events via the Google Calendar to EventON.
I need a solution right now.
This ticket is NOT about waiting for the update of the Sync addon!
Could please answer my questions please?

If facebook would have allowed a simple download of ICS file of the event that would make this a lot easier for public events. But as basilis mentioned we are still working on finding a solution.

When I built eventON it was not my intention to be in the game of API play with other vendors. So going forward I want to find a solution where we dont have to play games with APIs everytime they were changed. Because it eats so much of valuable time, which could have been used on more important things.

As far as facebook we are still trying out various things. Please stay tune.

Thanks Basilis and Ashan  for your time and reply.

Well Facebook does allow you to export Facebook events via ICS files. Even though event pictures are not included in these ICS files unfortunately and would have to be added manually then in WordPress. And this only works for personal Facebook profiles but not for Facebook pages unfortunately.

      Option 1:
So a possible solution is to buy the EventON ICS importer to import those ICS files.
      http://www.myeventon.com/addons/ics-importer/

I have attached an image to this post how this is done.

But I would rather try to find a solution to use with the Sync addon I already bought and use the Google Calendar to import those Facebook events.
      Option 2:
I have already posted a guide 5 days ago how to get the link to the iCalendar file Facebook is providing 5 days ago on the May 10,2018 (at 5:07PM)
So how do I get those events into the Google calendar I could easily import with the Sync addon?
The only solution I see is a manual copy of each single event inside the Google Calendar from the Facebook source to the Google one I can import again. That’s not really an elegant solution IMHO. Nevertheless I attached an image to make clear what I am talking about.

It has been over a week now since this ticket is open and my question for a workaround remains.
I would highly appreciate some guidance and “how to” or “best practice” here from you guys.
Is there at least a way to automate the manual copy?

    • By: infotainerdave May 17,2018 AT 8:51AM - Posted 5 years ago - #77190

so My idea is a little complicated and I have not tested it

so if you can download your ICS file from facebook to say MS outlook

then from outlook- export the ics file then you should technically be able to upload it using the http://www.myeventon.com/addons/ics-importer/

I think now with facebook that you can only download your own events- not the events of others- (but if they could send you the ics file – that might work)

its not a sync solution – facebook is still changing things, we know its important to you but right now there is not a lot we can do to automate the process

if you could find some app that automatically and periodically sent outlook or iphone events to google then you would need to periodically download the facebook ics file to your app and then it would send to google and then google sync would work (I hope)

Thanks infotainerdave. What you are describing is Option 1 in a nutshell. I even mentioned the EventON ICS importer, too. And yes this only works for events on your personal Facebook profile. But I explained before that I would not want to spend money on an addition addon because I already bought the Sync addon. Nevertheless it’s an option agreed.

And what you are suggesting in the second part of your reply is Option 2.
But I can’t find any advice on how to avoid the manual copy of each single event inside the Google Calendar from the Facebook source to the Google Calendar.

Have you guys been able to get a working link following my post from May 10,2018 AT 5:07PM?

I too would like an update. I recently purchased 3 Event on plugins and 1-5 sync licences and have never been able to use them (it was before the purchase warning was up). I think if you don’t have a timescale for fixing it, you should look at shelving the the product for now, regardless of wether there is a warning or not, the fact that it’s still on sale implies that a fix is on the way, but it doesn’t seem like that is the case.

An update would be much apprecaited

      Thanks
