that will work- but it will show the next 12 months events as well- and hide emtpy months
I hate to do this- there is the events list extended addon https://www.myeventon.com/addons/event-lists-extended/
this will show however many events you want to show regardless of the month- many people use this on the home page so you can show the next 3 events or the next 6 events no matter what months those events appear and then you would create a button underneath to click though to the full calendar for example
or you can use the Live now shortcode which you already have
[add_eventon_now]
that will show any events happening right this moment and the next upcoming event with a countdown
you can hide events right now or hide future events in myeventon>>>settings>>>>shortcodes event now ( you can build your own shortcode)
just remember the more events in the calendar the longer it takes to load so for the home page you tend to want that to load fast so having the 12 months on that page is not always advisable
